A small town of about 10,600 people, Bogalusa is located in Washington Parish. It takes its name from the choctaw bogue lusa meaning "dark waters" or "smoky waters". It was originally developed as a company town at the turn of the last century to exploit the surrounding pine forests with the Great Southern Lumber Company. This industry declined beginning in the 1960's, leading many citizens to migrate to find employment elsewhere in Louisiana. Bogalusa is known today for its river rafting activities on the Bogue Chitto, whether by inner tube (large buoy), canoe or kayak.
