It has about 50,000 inhabitants. Previously called San Ignacio de Loyola, San Ignacio de Velasco is the largest of the mission towns, but probably the least picturesque. Life revolves around the main square and the market. Agriculture being the most important activity at the time, lagoons and dams were created to satisfy the water needs of the mission. Thus, the nearby Laguna Guapomó is an ideal place for bathing or fishing. About 4 km from the city is the small community of San Rafaelito de Sutuniquiña, entirely dedicated to handicrafts made with clay (jars, plates, souvenirs...)
