Located on the left bank of the Marincho River and classified as an important geological heritage site by UNESCO, the Gruta del Palacio is located 46 km from Trinidad, going north on Route 3. This cave, which is about 70 years old (Cretaceous period), is formed by labyrinthine columns and cylindrical structures that can reach a diameter of 1.80 m, similar to strange sculptures of reddish color. There are several legends explaining the origin of this rock formation. In the past, some people have suggested that it was petrified palms, while others have suggested a theory that the formation was built by the Charruas natives. Currently, the first meters of the cave are relatively easy to access, but to venture deeper, you will have to be thin, agile and especially brave! The cave is said to be 400 meters deep. A century ago, the speleologist Mario Isola managed to reach a depth of over 150 meters. Claustrophobic people should not go. One thing is sure, it is one of the most tourist attractions of Flores. It is open to visitors all year round and guided tours are organized for those who want to know more about the history and geology of the cave. The cost of the tour is $50 and the schedule is Thursday through Sunday from 8am to 5pm. A small hostel is located next door, where a screening room and information about the cave is provided.
