Located on the northern bank of the Negro River, it is the second largest city in the department of Tacuarembó, with 10,000 inhabitants. It is located 140 km from the departmental capital and 250 km from Montevideo, along the Ruta 5. The main tourist attraction of Paso de los Toros is the Represa Dr. Gabriel Terra, a hydroelectric dam inaugurated in 1945. This dam is named after the man who was president of Uruguay in the 1930s. Its artificial lake, the Rincón del Bonete, covers an area of 120,000 hectares. It is possible to visit the dam and the lake. The river coasts, here as elsewhere in the department, are suitable for fishing and it is possible to stay there (camping and parador). When you cross the Negro River, by the Centennial Bridge (or Puente Centenario), heading towards the city center, you will reach the wide 18 de Julio Avenue, which contains very pleasant public gardens.
