The Laguna de Castillos is located in the Rocha department, 15 km south of Castillos and 50 km north of Rocha town. It is a strategic place to observe the 200 bird species identified, which was declared a "Refuge of Wildlife" in 1966 and now considered a protected area. Other characteristics, the lagoon is surrounded by a unique ombúes forest of its kind; some species are over 500 years of age. It is important to know that it is extremely rare to see so many species grouped in one place. The arroyo Valizas (watercourses) flowing into the lagoon also connects it to the Atlantic Ocean. Be aware that it is impossible to navigate, hunt and camp on the lagoon.
