We come here to bask in the sun on wild beaches, do a little surfing, hike in an unspoiled landscape of pine forests and large dunes, fish in front of the colony of sea wolves apathetic on the rocks ... But also to take a nap in a hammock in front of a rustic rancho, to cook on an old stove the fish gleaned from the fishermen the same day, with a few vegetables chosen conscientiously in one of the two ageless grocery stores of the village, spending the evenings by candlelight along the small main street, exploring the houses of the locals transformed into extravagant bohemian restaurants and bars where acoustic music resounds all evening, prolonging the party on the beach until the early morning while contemplating the memorable starry sky without light pollution... Today, this village is like a little secret, very popular with the hippie-chic vacationers of Montevideo in search of tranquility and by tourists who have heard of its existence. Because it is undeniable: a wind of freedom blows on Cabo Polonio. This small village of colorful wooden houses, planted in an anarchic way on white sand dunes and green lawns fed by streams, is a mythical place of the Uruguayan Atlantic coast. It reminds more of an Irish village lost on a jagged coast than a Latin village on the border of Brazil. Dominated by its white lighthouse on the cape that connects its two inhabited coves, the playa Sur and La Calavera (or playa Norte), its climate is harsh in summer because here there are no trees, the sun beats down and the wind blows hard. Surrounded by a natural setting constituted by a national park of pine forest and dunes protected since 2009, the village has preserved its authenticity, with its wooden ranchos and its environment: there is neither running water (a tanker passes to supply the houses) nor electricity (generator, solar or hydraulic energy for the most comfortable). Here, no concrete (only sand), wooden or hard-built shacks but always very minimalist, no cars, motorcycles or other motorized vehicles (except for the buggies that drop off tourists). You will cross the whole village in only a few minutes. The site is also home to a remarkable feature: colonies of sea wolves live there all year round, offering visitors a unique opportunity to observe these majestic animals in their natural habitat.
