Historical and educational center in Lejre offering a walk that takes you back to the stone age of hunter-gatherers..
Living like the Viking ancestors, dressed in sturdy cloths, in wooden and thatched houses, making bread, cultivating fields replanted with varieties of cereals from earlier times, using only tools from the Bronze or Iron Age: this is the program of the experimental and archaeological center. One can freely walk through the village and enter the buildings. This historical and educational center was created in 1964. The walk on its 43 hilly hectares, and by places wooded, is rather pleasant. It takes you back 10,000 years, to the stone age of the hunter-gatherers... or to the Iron Age village of Lethra and its sacrificial marsh.
Don't miss the main attraction: a reconstructed building, considered the largest Viking hall in Denmark (about 60 meters long, 12 meters wide and 11 meters high). A reconstruction worthy of the legends of the Skjöldungs kings. Inside, all exhibits are based on the results of archaeological excavations.
On the same grounds, in nineteenth-century style farmhouses, you will come across holidaymakers dressed in period costumes. They come to spend an immersive weekend in the daily life of the past; it is an all-inclusive experience for which there is a waiting list. Your tour ends with the craft workshops, including the textile workshop that supplies the National Museum of Copenhagen, among others.
