The capital of Paraíba is the most wooded of the country, a European city of rich and new appearance, though situated in a poor state of Brazil; it is in this respect different from Recife or Salvador. It borders the ocean at Tambaú, and one can tour its three churches - one of which is superb - the palace, and the beautiful lagoon surrounded by coconut trees. Wild and beautiful beaches. It was called Vila de Filipea de Nossa Senhora das Neves, to suit the Spanish domination of Philip II; then Paraíba, in 1640, when it returned to the Portuguese fold; and finally Joao Pessoa, in the 20th century, in homage to the governor of the state, friend of Vargas.
