About fifty kilometers north of Recife, you can visit the island of Itamaracá. It is an ecological paradise: coconut trees, superb beaches. According to historians, nine years before the arrival of Pedro Cabral in Brazil, Portuguese families were already living there. To see on the island: the imposing Forte Orange, erected by the Dutch in 1631 on the orders of the Prince of Nassau, the Peixe-Boi preservation centre, which presents a very interesting project for the reintroduction of manatees, today on the verge of extinction in the rivers of the region, and the church dedicated to Nossa Senhora de La Conceição and its panoramic view of the Santa Cruz channel
