Porto de Galinhas, a quiet little town in the 90s, has evolved into a fashionable seaside resort with an ever-growing number of pousadas. The turquoise waters of the sea mingle with those of the lagoons, bordered by reef barriers. A jangada ride on the reefs upon arrival at Porto Galinhas, to discover the paradisiacal beaches of the site, will allow you to appreciate the overall beauty of the site. The town's origins, however, are sinister. Chegaram as galinhas do Angola or "The chickens of Angola have arrived": these were the codes of the slave traders who continued their activity after the abolition of slavery and the strict surveillance of ports by English naval vessels. They unloaded their deadly cargo on this coast, neither too close nor too far from Recife, its troops and its market. Today, activities are more peaceful. In the long term, the impact of poorly controlled growth is questionable. The surge in tourism to Porto de Galinhas has created a veritable inflation in prices. Luxury resorts are investing heavily in the region, and even the prices of small pousadas are soaring, as are those of local shops, beachside barracas and restaurants. You can choose to get away from the center by staying in the cheaper Maracaipe area, and visit the bars near the Sirinhaém River, which are more popular with locals than tourists. In this case, it's best to have a car, as cabs are also very expensive.
