Jamestown is the first permanent colony in America. It was founded on May 14, 1607, by Captain John Smith (1580-1631). It followed a first attempt by the British in 1585 to set up on Roanoke Island in North Carolina. Fort James, quickly built, defended the newly landed settlers from the many attacks of the Powhatans. It was during one of these attacks that, according to his writings, John Smith was captured by the Indians, sentenced to death by their leader and barely spared thanks to his daughter, Pocahontas. Jamestown was abandoned in the 18th century to Williamsburg, which developed 7 miles further north. Jamestown is connected to Williambsurg and Yorktown by Colonial Parkway.
