Located 160 km from St. Petersburg and 500 km from Moscow, Novgorod, with a population of 220,000, is at the heart of this inter-metropolitan area which, if it was once the political and economic core of medieval Russia, is today preserved from the hustle and bustle of the two capitals. Despite its name, which means "new city", Novgorod is one of the oldest Russian cities.
