In this cathedral, which is the oldest Russian Orthodox church (1045-1050), you can admire the Bolshoi and Mali iconostases from the 12th and 17th centuries, as well as frescoes, including that of Constantine and Helen, dating from the mid-11th century. But above all, the protective icon of Novgorod Our Lady of the Sign (in Russian: znamenie), whose mysterious origin dates back to the 12th century and which is said to have protected Novgorod during the attack of the prince of Suzdal in 1170.

Située au sud de Saint Petersbourg, la cathédrale Sainte-Sophie de Novgorod a été construite entre 1045 et 1050 dans la forteresse de Novgorod. C'est l'une des premières constructions en pierre dans la Russie du Nord. Saint-Sophie se compose de 5 couples dorées et argentées, A l'intérieur se trouve l’icône Notre-Dame-du-Signe.
