CHURCH OF THE TRANSFIGURATION OF THE SAINT SAVIOR

The present church is built on the site of another church that was destroyed and once housed the famous icon of Our Lady of the Sign. It dates from the 14th century and is no longer open to worship. It is the only place where the frescoes of Theophanes the Greek, a very famous iconographic monk, who was one of Andrei Rublev's masters, have remained intact. They are rather pale, but a small room upstairs allows us to see the fragments that have been restored.
