Today, the small town of Bač is a bit sleepy, located in northwestern Serbia in Vojvodina, near the Danube. Yet it is one of the oldest cities in the region, whose presence and importance is attested to as early as antiquity; it is even found in accounts by Arab merchants! For a long time an important Hungarian city (and royal city), it passed under the Ottoman authority before becoming definitively Serbian at the time of the independence of the country. The former royal city is especially famous for its medieval fortress, which is one of the most preserved monuments in Serbia. A nice one-day visit.
