The small town of Čelarevo, about 30 kilometers from Novi Sad on the Danube, is very authentic and makes a nice distraction for a road trip in Vojvodina. In addition to its pretty churches, cute historic center, and central square that make for a nice (and short) tourist walk, the former German colony is the closest access point to the Avar (or Čelarevo) necropolis, a leading archaeological site in the country. At the site, no less than 650 tombs were found, a mixture of avaric shamanic burials, superb Khazarian Jewish (menzora) engraved brick tombs, and some Slavic tombs
