Aignay-le-Duc is located in the north of the Côte-d'Or, on the Langres plateau, about 60 kilometers from Dijon. This small and peaceful village full of charm has some nice treasures such as the Saint-Pierre-et-Saint-Paul church built in the 13th century on stilts and its Renaissance altarpiece, or a magnificent and picturesque 18th century wash house called "de la Margelle". The region of Aignay-le-Duc is also a meeting place for potholing enthusiasts because of the numerous exsurgences, caves, cavities, chasms and underground rivers present all around the city; the most famous being the springs of the Coquille or the Cave aux loups. Worth a try! Aignay was once a Gallic land (the menhir of the Pierre-Fiche attests to the Celtic presence here) and was one of the residences and strongholds of the Dukes of Burgundy. This prosperous town grew rich thanks to its cloth-making activity. At the time of its attachment to the crown of France, its walls were knocked down. Later on, other wars will damage the town. However, there are still some beautiful vestiges of this splendid period, notably the castles in the small hamlets of Duesme, Mauvilly, Quemigny and Rochefort. A visit to this town with its three rivers is a must. These rivers are fed by three springs: the Galopine, the Froide Fontaine d'Aignay, and the Cadet Brot fountain. Don't hesitate to go up the course of the Coquille for a nice hike to its source which gushes out at the foot of a natural cirque.
