QUARTIER SAINT PIERRE
Historic site with 11th-century motte castrale and remains of a 10th-13th-century church
A historic site, the Saint-Pierre district (formerly Bourg-Le-Comte) was the seat of one of Sées' five parishes. Between the 10th and 13th centuries, a fortified castle and the Saint-Pierre-du-Château church were built on the site of a Merovingian church (5th-7th centuries). The bell tower and three arcades remain, as does the motte castrale, the artificial mound where the fortified castle stood. These mark the presence of the Vikings in Sées. The district is also the birthplace of Osmond de Sées, chancellor to William the Conqueror and Bishop of Salisbury.
