Kennett Square is a city of approximately 6,000 people in Chester County. It was an important site during the Battle of Brandywine during the American Revolution and later became part of the Underground Railroad, a network that helped the fugitive slaves to win the North and freedom before the War of Secession. But Kennett Square is known to be the city of the fungus! Shitaké, Paris mushrooms… all kinds of varieties are produced on farms around and over 130 000 tons are exported each year under different labels. The mushroom culture began around 1880, under the impetus of the many Italian immigrants installed in the region. Festivities are organized in September, this is the Kennett Mushroom Festival (parade, tastings…). The city center is charming, it makes good strolling through the shops of the main street and is a delight for its many cafés and restaurants.
