This illustrious fortress is located at the beginning of the Nieuwstraat; you will notice its 17th century portal showing a lion with the city coat of arms with its two keys. The Leiden Burcht is a fortress built on a small artificial hill, and is one of the oldest examples of a fortress in the Netherlands. Since the 17th century it has been used as a municipal garden. There is a pleasant walkway with a view over the whole city. A café opened its doors a few years ago. It is a must-see place.
