Municipal museum in Leiden, which traces the city's glorious past and its flourishing activities
The recently renovated City Museum is housed in the city's former cloth hall, built in 1640 by Arent van 's Gravesande. The historical collection on the second floor traces the city's glorious past and its flourishing activities (between 1640 and 1800), illustrated by paintings by Isaac van Swanenburgh (father of Rembrandt's master Jacob), and explains the phases of wool production. The museum exhibits paintings from the 17th century (including Rembrandt, Jan Steen and Gerard Dou).
