The only two remaining gates with national monument status in Leiden
Two entrance gates are visible here, in the past there were more than ten of them. The other eight were destroyed in the 19th century when the city was expanded. The Morspoort is the western city gate and was built in 1669, while the Zijlpoort, or northeast gate, was built in 1667. The former is the work of Wiellem van der Helm and served for a long time as a prison. These are the only two remaining gates and have the status of a national monument. A barracks was built at the beginning of the 19th century where the infantry was housed until 1940.
