Renamed New Fuzhou for a time, Sibu's development was fueled by Chinese immigration in the early 20th century. Today, it is Sarawak's3rd largest city with 170,000 inhabitants. Its location at the confluence of the Rejang and Igan rivers makes it a dynamic port city. Its Chinese roots are still very much in evidence, notably through the presence of numerous temples. The local population is also made up of Malays, Ibans and Melanaus. The latter, skilled fishermen, have always occupied the banks of the Rejang River. You can still see them at work as soon as you leave the center. It's for this river and the superb longhouses that we decide to pass through Sibu, a stopover that's more practical than essential.
