Betong is the main town in the division of the same name, which comprises four districts: Betong, Saratok, Pusa and Kabong. Betong has played an important role in Sarawak's history, as it was here that numerous clashes took place against the administration of Rajah Charles Brooke. These events led to the construction of the state's first fort, Fort Lily, in 1858, in an attempt to thwart the attacks of Chief Iban Rentap and his followers. The fortress also served as Betong's administrative center and police station. Bukit Sadok, Rentap's stronghold, is located on a hill adjacent to the town of Betong.
