Located at the southernmost point of the Kenyan coast, close to the Tanzanian border, Shimoni is a small port town open to the Indian Ocean, which was important in the heyday of Swahili civilization, thanks to the slave trade. Caves, now inhabited by bats, were used to gather departing slaves. Nowadays, without any particular attraction apart from a pleasant atmosphere and its coastal location, Shimoni represents above all for tourists the access to Wasini Island and the marine park. Besides tourism, traditional fishing remains the main source of income for the villagers.
