North of Portsmouth, in the ruins of Fort Shirley, an 18th century English garrison left steel cannons, which can be seen on the raised site. There is also a magnificent view of Prince Rupert Bay, which is sheltered to the north by Cabrits Point. The point takes its name from an old custom of the sailors who used to drop goats there when they landed. Their cattle lived there in freedom until the sailors returned, only to find fresh meat at their next port of call in the area. There is also a small park on site.
