This charming little town on the banks of the Narew (a tributary of the Vistula) is one of Mazovia's oldest sites and one of Warsaw's most popular destinations for Sunday getaways. The town prospered in the 16th century, when it became the official residence of the bishops of Płock. Its Jesuit college, founded in the 16th century, contributed significantly to the spread of education in the east of the country. During the Second World War, the town was destroyed and half its population exterminated. After the war, it was rebuilt using illustrations from the late 18th century.
