Remains of Domfront's feudal castle, featuring a vast castral enclosure with a keep, sections of wall, ramparts...

All that remains are the ruins of the castle built in the 11th century by the Dukes of Bellême on a spur of Armorican sandstone. Sully, Henri IV's minister, ordered its dismantling in 1610. The remarkable remains of this former stronghold include the keep, the chapel of the Saint-Symphorien priory with its unique buttress-columns dating from 1100-1120, the "aula" (large reception hall) to the west of the keep and the ramparts with their curtain wall. The setting is ideal for a break in the park or a stroll along a steep path.

Took a friend from Ohio there today. It had been ages since I'd been there myself and had totally forgotten how amazing the views are from up there . The town is beautiful but the ruins of what was once a massive castle standing there against that 180° view of the valley below is quite breathtaking.
