The best way to see the Sumidero is undoubtedly from the river itself, although there are a few viewpoints that allow you to observe it from higher up. On the Grijalva River or Río Grande de Chiapas, many excursions leave from the piers in Chiapa de Corzo. The trip lasts two hours round trip, on boats that sail at full speed (hang on!). Like a landscape from Conan Doyle's Lost World, bare-faced cliffs rise almost 1,000m above the river. At the end of the tour, the lake is 265 m deep. The guides make several stops to point out, here, the cliff covered with an impressive mossy waterfall evoking the shape of a Christmas tree, there, a stray crocodile...
