A little further north, continuing along Route 180 (75 kilometers from Veracruz), are the Tontonian ruins of Quiahuixtlán, which means "Place of the Rain". These ruins are built on the hill of Los Metates, from which there is a beautiful view of the Veracruz coast. In fact, the view of the surrounding area is well worth the detour alone. It is below, on the coast that Cortes founded Villa Rica, where he sank his ships to dissuade his men from retreating. The alliance with the Totonaques to bring down the Triple Alliance dominated by the Aztecs of Tenochitlán is decided here.
