Wilmington is a harbor town of approximately 112,000 residents located near the mouth of the Cape Fear River. A main coastal town of the state, it was founded in the 1720 s and organized quickly around the plantation economy and slavery. Some of its citizens are getting richer and there are still signs of this wealth spent in Victorian homes that are connecting the historic center and residential neighborhoods. In the late 1800 s, the city experienced strong industrial development. The city center has some brick buildings from the beginning of the twentieth century, converted into bars, restaurants or shops. While walking is the ideal means of locomotion, you can also borrow the free trolley for downtown. Wilmington's Scenic Riverwalk invites to wander along the shores of Cape Fear over 1.8 miles, including a fairly lively first part between Nun Street and Market Street. A stop on the wooden pontoon provides an opportunity to admire the Cape Fear Memorial Bridge and Battleship North Carolina. With a little more time, among the special places to visit, you can mention (especially if you are family) the Wilmington Railroad Museum, which is located opposite Wilmington and Beach Convention & Visitors Bureau, Airlie Gardens, a superb botanical garden, and, of course, the Battleship North Carolina, which is close to the close proximity of Downtown. Guided tours are organized in the city following various themes, and excursions can be made to meet dolphins with only a few inches. For your night trips, remember that Wilmington is home to about twenty breweries who are all places to enjoy a drink and dinner.Rather dynamic from the tourist point of view, the community has become an important center of film production since the mid -1990 s. Studios have been built there. It was turned into David Lynch's Blue Velvet, the Jackal of Michael Caton-Jones, and many scenes from the Dawson series and the Scott Brothers series. Many fans travel only to see where their favorite series have been turned. Two annual events are particularly popular here: the Capre Fear Kite Festival in November in Kure Beach, North Carolina Azalea Festival in April and Wilmington Beer Week in late October. That the famous basketball Michael Jordan grew up in Wilmington and is one of the city's personalities.
