The city owes its name to the New Hope Chapel, which was located on a hill at the intersection of two main roads. It was here that one of the country's first universities was built in 1795: the University of North Carolina. Subsequently, the entire city was organized around the university centre. Chapel Hill is known for the political positioning of its inhabitants, rather to the left on the American political scene. It's a nice little student town. Franklin Street's main street is home to many restaurants, bars and shops.
