Greensboro, the third largest city in North Carolina, houses about 285,000 people. It is close to three large interstates (I -85, I -40 and I -73). Founded in 1808, the city is named after General Nathanael Greene, a hero of the War of Independence. The city became a big railway node in the early 1840 s, partly because of the textile industries that developed there. On January 28, 1856, both tracks from Charlotte and Goldsboro were linked between Greensboro and Jamestown. This allowed the Confederate Army to benefit from an important route of liaison and transportation of materiel during the Civil War. In 1891, more than 60 trains arrived daily in Greensboro. The city then received the nickname of The Gate City.During the 1960 s, Greensboro played an essential role in the fight against segregation. It was in the Woolworth cafeteria in downtown that four young black students launched on February 1, 1960 a non-violent movement (Greensboro sit-ins) that was gradually moving and for several months the whole country.Today, although many textile industries have disappeared, Greensboro still has the offices of some of the most notable such as International Textile Group (Cone, Burlington Industries). The Chinese aeronautical group is now the largest employer in the city. Other important employers, education (there are no fewer than 7 universities in Greensboro) and Hondajet (jet-type aircraft manufacturing by Japanese company since 2015). The city center of Greensboro (Historic Downtown) has a very special charm and it makes good strides, especially on Elm Street on both sides of the magnificent Jefferson Standard Building (1923) and Lincoln Financial Building (1990), two accoladed skyscrapers with 18 and 20 floors that marvel at A harmonic blend of neo-Gothic, neo-classical and Art Deco styles. Between the many bars and restaurants in Downtown, several places of visit deserve a detour. This is the case with the City Historical Museum, bordered by Lebauer Park, and the International Civil Rights Center Museum. The Carolina Theater and the Cone Denim Entertainment Center are both located in the heart of the city. Greensboro Coliseum Complex is an immense multisports complex and shows located in the southwest of downtown. It can accommodate more than 23,000 spectators.Among the major events, the city organizes the Greensboro Fringe Festival (February) each year and The North Carolina Folk Festival (September).
