A typical small southern town with a charming historic centre, Hillsborough is home to many 18th and 19th century buildings, most of which have been very well restored. The city was the scene of many clashes during the War of Independence and the Civil War. Located about 12 miles from Durham and as far as Chapel Hill, it is an ideal destination for a quiet place to live near the famous universities of Duke and UNC. The city is home to a few writers and offers a small and dynamic cultural centre with 5 art galleries and music festivals and concerts organised several times a year.Hillsborough is organized around two nuclei, the main street of N Churton Street which houses the galleries, most of the bars, restaurants and cafés and, about a fifteen-minute walk from there, West Hillsborough, which once hosted the city's train station and textile factory. A district in full transformation with the arrival of a huge apartment complex, known in particular for its brewery: Mystery Brewing Company, the lair for BBQ lovers: Hillsborough BBQ Company and its gourmet ice creams at Whit's Frozen Custard. If you want a complete overview of Hillsborough by walking, why start your visit by taking the River Walk from the Weaver Street Trailhead parking lot, walk west along the trail to Gold Park, walk up to West Hillsborough and join the main street of N Churton Street by strolling along the pretty residential street of W Margaret Lane.
