Raleigh is the capital of North Carolina. Built in 1792, it is nicknamed "the city of oaks" because of the many trees that dot it. It is one of the few cities in the United States that were built specifically to serve as a capital city. Its name comes from Sir Walter Raleigh, a British aristocrat who financed several of the first expeditions to this part of the continent. The city's activities have long been organized around the exercise of power and administration. Although relatively spared by the Civil War clash, Raleigh emerged from the conflict weakened economically - as did neighbouring cities - and it was after the Second World War that its economy really developed. When the Research Triangle Park (RTP) was created in 1959, the city underwent a real renewal, with the emergence of the computer, advanced technology and financial sectors. Today, its city centre is dynamic and offers many possibilities for cultural, culinary or festive outings. This vitality is fuelled by the continuous flow of national and international students who converge on the Triangle every year. The city also hosts many museums, most of them free of charge, making it a prime cultural destination. Every year, the State Fair, NC State Fair, attracts crowds from all over the state for 2 weeks in October to test all kinds of crazy and fried culinary specialities, experience thrills and discover the region's craft and agricultural heritage.
