Appointed parish priest in 1873, while the building was still under construction, Abbé Victor Paysant took charge of the church's destiny, decorating it with bright colors and liturgical inscriptions, and naming it the "living, talking church of Ménil-Gondouin". After his death, the new abbot had the paintings removed. It was the determination of the village's former mayor and a handful of volunteers that restored the church to its former glory. Today, the church is closed to the public and must be visited by telephone or e-mail.
