Founded in the 19th century, Kadoma was first called Gatooma, until 1982. In the 20th century, Gatooma was a pleasant little town, overrun by gold miners. Since the mining activities in the surrounding area have declined somewhat in favor of the cotton industry, the town has been rather depressed. Although its economy has slowed down, it is still the first major city on the Harare-Bulawayo route. The A5 is the main artery of the city, halfway between Harare and Gweru (about 150 km). All kombis, chicken buses and coaches that travel between Bulawayo and Harare stop at Kadoma.
