When General Lafayette visited Hamer's Town during the War of Independence, he claimed that the city reminded him of Le Havre, France, and that is how it was renamed Havre de Grâce in 1785. It now has a population of 13,000 and, in 2014, was named one of the top 20 small towns in the United States by the Smithsonian magazine. It is true that Havre de Grace is very pleasant, with its banks on the banks of the Susquehanna River, its small town centre and its pretty lighthouse.
