Naumburg-an-der-Saale is the most beautiful small town in the Saxon part of Saxony-Anhalt (south of Halle), and it is undoubtedly the most touristic. There's more than one reason for that! Dominating the pretty wine valleys of the Saale-Unstrut, which produce very beautiful white wines, proud of its past as an important bishopric, it boasts a colourful and charismatic old town with a very beautiful architectural substance, essentially Renaissance. It has one of the most important Romanesque cathedrals in Germany, known for its statuary and in particular for the Gothic statue of a cult figure in the country's medieval history, Ute von Naumburg. The writer Umberto Eco once said of this hallucinating statue of realism and finesse that it represented his female ideal. As for Walt Disney, he would have been inspired by his costume to elaborate that of his Snow White.... In Naumburg, we will also follow in the footsteps of Nietzsche, who lived there young and attended his school.
