Villingen-Schwenningen is actually two cities, combined administratively in 1972 but with distinct characters. Villingen was an Austrian possession from 1326 to 1805 and badoise, and Catholic. Schwenningen belongs historically to Evangelical Wurtemberg. In Villingen, medieval ramparts interspersed with towers on most doors surround many testimonies of the past millennium; Schwenningen's development is more recent, mainly linked to the watch industry in the th century. Finally, they are distinguished even by the water flowing through it: in Villingen passes the Brigach, one of the 2 rivers forming the Danube a few kilometres downstream; In Schwenningen, the Neckar is a source for the Schwenninger Hof, a bog near the town. Villingen and Schwenningen are separated from a few kilometres and you will not have trouble visiting one and the other, along a circuit in the Black Forest.
