Humaitá comes from ymá itá, "ancient stone" in guaraní. This village located 38 km south of Pilar is famous for the ruins of the church of San Carlos Borromeo, which was bombed by the allies and is featured in all Paraguayan history books. The now peaceful setting, by the river, is ideal for immersing oneself in a history book, or for a chat with the scholar Vicenta Miranda (✆ +595 985 270 690). Everyone in the village knows each other and you will have no problem finding her. Del Sur and Ñeembucú provide connections twice a day with Pilar, weather permitting (1 hour and a half of track, impassable in case of rain). By taxi, count 350,000 Gs round trip with waiting on the spot.
