Bernried, on the shores of Lake Starnberg, is one of the prettiest villages in the area. Its old thatched farmhouses are well worth a visit, as is its marina, which resembles a small Mediterranean marina. The Benedictine cloister on the waterfront has been converted into a Renaissance castle, but is not open to the public. Bernried's main attraction is its Museum of the Imagination (Buchheim Museum der Fantasie), with its collection of Expressionist works. Since 1999, the museum has not aged a day, and continues to impress with its very modern architecture.
