Neo-Gothic castle once home to King Ludwig II of Bavaria, then Empress Sissi and finally the Wittelsbachs.
To the east of Lake Starnberg, the castle was erected by Bavarian Elector Ferdinand Maria in 1676. Rehabilitated by Maximilian II in neo-Gothic style, the castle became the summer residence of his son, King Ludwig II of Bavaria. It was also here that he spent the last days of his life, before disappearing under circumstances that have never been clarified. Sissi, the Empress, also stayed here regularly during her youth.
