The town of Saint Johnsbury has a population of just 7,500. It has long been prosperous thanks to its maple syrup business. The town is still marked by the Fairbanks family, one of whose ancestors, Thaddeus Fairbank, invented the pan balance in 1830. Even today, the Fairbank Museum and Planetarium and the majestic St Johnsbury Athenaeum public library, built in 1871, bear witness to the family's legacy. The town is bisected by the Passumpsic River, which can be crossed via the Concord Avenue Bridge.
