The history of the American nation cannot be separated from the history of the East Coast. Great Barrington was, in 1781, one of the first cities in the United States to free a slave and the birthplace of W. E. B. Du Bois, who was the first African-American to earn a doctorate at Harvard. Today, the city lives through the seasons. People come here to ski in the winter and hike in the summer. Downtown, antique dealers attract the region's enthusiasts. The Appalachian Trail, a hiking trail that crosses the East Coast for more than 3,500 km, passes not far away. Great Barrington is one more testament to the beauty of the Berkshires.
