Ludlow was established in 1883 on the railroad line to provide water for the trains. The discovery of gold deposits in the nearby hills soon led to the town's expansion. From 1906 to 1940, Ludlow also became the terminus of the Tonopah & Tidewater Railroad, part of the Pacific Coast Borax Company, which carried borax from Death Valley to the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Railway. Mining activity ceased in the 1940s and the town survived only because of Route 66, until it was bypassed by Interstate 40 in the 1970s. Today it is a ghost town, so to speak. We stop there for its Ludlow Café, which has kept its original aspect and where lunch is pleasant, and for its gas station. Note that since 2022, Route 66 to and from Amboy is closed.
