Barstow marks the border between the Mojave Desert and the large urbanized areas of California. It is also the end of I-40, which Route 66 followed from Oklahoma. Ideally located between Las Vegas and Los Angeles, at the southern entrance to the Mojave Desert, it is a must for many travelers, including, of course, those on Route 66. Founded in 1886, the city is named after William Barstow Strong, who was president of the Santa Fe Railroad Company from 1881 to 1889. Main Street (Route 66, Highway 15, National Old Trails Highway) is the main thoroughfare. Aside from a few historic buildings on this major thoroughfare and the station area, there is little to see in Barstow.
