Daggett was founded in 1880, after the discovery of silver near Calico, 7 miles north. Located at the intersection of several railroad lines, the town prospered from its silver and later borax mines, the railroad system, and the goods it transported. However, the city declined in 1902. In the 1980s, the government decided to develop two solar power plants in Daggett. This gigantic installation provides electricity to about 23,000 homes. Despite this, and despite the proximity of a large military base, the town's population does not exceed 200 people. Although the original route of Route 66 follows the railroad tracks, it is advisable to leave them about 2 miles before Daggett, at the airport, and cross the railroad tracks to reach Santa Fe Avenue, which runs parallel to Route 66; then follow the avenue westward for 5 miles to reach downtown. You will discover the grounds where the thousands of solar reflectors are located, and then, as you continue towards the center, countless old buildings, very photogenic. Among these, let us quote the Desert Market of 1908 (35596 Santa Fe Avenue), in excellent state.
