Devil's Elbow is a surreal place in the middle of one of the Orzak's great forests. It is named for the bend in the Big Piney River that occurs here. The present bridge was built in 1923, shortly before the Route 66 route passed through here. In 1942, Route 66 was realigned to a more northerly route (Highway Z), a 2X2 lane road designed to handle the heavy traffic of military machines, long before the holiday traffic. Today, travelers in a hurry use I-44. These two other roads (Highway Z and I-44) also have their own bridge over the Big Piney River. The Elbow Inn is a popular biker bar located next to the historic 1923 bridge (Teardrop Road). It has been open since 1929 and was closed for renovation during 2022.
