As one progresses westward, the rock gradually outcrops and the Ozarks massif takes on its full dimension. Missouri was, after Illinois and Kansas, the third state to have completely paved its portion of Route 66. The event was celebrated in Rolla in March 1931. The city has preserved a few old buildings such as the John A. Dillon Log House (3023rd Street), built in 1857 and which was the seat of the first County Courthouse (now in ruins) or, across the street, the Old Courthouse which dates from 1860. Today, Rolla is known primarily for its university and as the city where Missouri's first nuclear reactor was built in 1961.
